Katarina Witt started to ice skate as early as age 5 years. Her talent soon became obvious, and she gained entry to a special school that caters to children who have a passion for sport in Karl-Marx-Stadt. Her coach Jutta was also in attendance. Witt was able to make her debut year in 1982, when she finished second at the World Championships held in Copenhagen. After that, she began dominating the sport thanks to elegance and grace. Olympic success At the 1984 Sarajevo Winter Games, Katarina Witt won a close race to claim the women's figure skating gold medal. The victory she won four years earlier was even closer. The free-skating competition, but earned the gold medal based upon her results during the compulsory figure and the short-form program. Witt is the first female figure skater who has won the same competition twice, in the same year since Sonja Heine. Hall of Fame Witt competed at Lillehammer Winter Games in 1994 following her successful run acting. In spite of not receiving the gold medal, she impressed the crowd. Witt was elected into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame in 1995.
