As a biological concept, the term adult refers to a human or animal that is a person who has matured. Adults are considered to be a social notion and a legal one within the world of humans. Legal adult means a person has reached the age of adulthood and is considered an independent, self-sufficient person and accountable. They may also be regarded as an "major". The point at which a person becomes an adult legally is 18, however, the definition of legal maturity is different based upon the nation or legal system, as well as their psychological state.

The age of adulthood marks the point that the person is at maturity both in physical and mental growth. Adulthood is typically thought of as beginning at the age of 20 or 21. Middle age starts at approximately 40 and is followed by the elderly age of 60. The three phases of adulthood are the early years (from the mid 30s until late 60s) and middle adulthood, from mid-30s until late-60s and then later adulthood, (mid-60s through end of life). When we reach early adulthood the body is at its full physical maturity. But, the height and our weight can grow. During young adulthood we reach the peak of our physical abilities.
